Wilson Bentley

The Snowflake Man

Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley was a Vermont meteorologist and photographer who created a method of documenting the unique forms of snowflakes in Jericho at the end of the 19th century. The images featured in this video are from his collection of over 5000 snowflake photographs.

UPCOMING EVENT (date TBA)

UVM conservation biologist Joe Roman is currently studying Bentley’s methods and comparing modern snowflakes to those from 100 years ago to hold a mirror up to our changing climate. If conditions allow, he will demonstrate methods for collecting and photographing snowflakes with a phone and we’ll project them along with Bentley’s snowflakes.
